On the evening of November 25, the Joint Science College (JSC) held the 11th "Scientific Research Causerie" in the lecture hall R. 106, JSC Office Building with the aim to expand students’ academic visions and create an international platform for faculty and student exchanges. Professor Murray Batchelor and Professor Penelope Brothers from Australian National University were invited as the guest speakers. Over 50 student representatives from the Joint Science College, the School of Mathematics and Statistics, and the School of Oceanography participated in the event hosted by Zhan Xinlin, a biological science major student, 2023 cohort.

The event began with Professor Murray Batchelor sharing his personal journey in academic growth. He drew on the experience observing the tidal waves of the Qiantang River with physicist Michael Berry to explain the fundamental principles of tidal surges and the mathematical modeling process using partial differential equations, Airy functions, and quantum analogies. With vivid photos and surfing footage, Murray Batchelor, made complex theoretical concepts engaging and accessible, fully sparking the students' interest in research.

Professor Penelope Brothers then shared insights from her career and research journey. She highlighted her groundbreaking work on metal porphyrins, particularly boron porphyrin complexes, using hemoglobin and chlorophyll as examples. She also discussed the challenges faced in her research and strategies for balancing academic work with a fulfilling life, demonstrating resilience and a positive attitude. Her talk inspired both students and faculty with valuable lessons.

During the interactive session, students actively asked questions on topics such as academic direction, career development, and interdisciplinary research methods. The two professors, drawing from their own experiences, patiently answered the students' questions. Their interaction created strong academic atmosphere and led to in-depth exchange.

This event not only facilitated academic integration across disciplines but also highlighted the spirit of pursuing truth and exploration. It’s a vivid practice of the college's core mission to foster virtue through education, while enhancing students' global competence. The Joint Science College will uphold its international educational philosophy, creating high-quality academic platforms to help students grow in a global context and contribute to cultivating outstanding talents with both patriotism and international competitiveness.
